A retail kiosk is a fabricated mild-steel frame wrapped in weatherproof panels, topped with a stone counter and a toughened-glass service window, and wired and plumbed to run on its own. Get those materials right and the kiosk earns its place in a mall or an airport for years. Get them wrong and it looks tired before the first lease renewal.

Most kiosk quotes hide this. You see a render and a number, not the spec underneath. So here is what actually goes into a Kaizeng kiosk, layer by layer, and why each choice matters when the unit sits in a high-footfall spot and takes a beating every day.

What is the kiosk frame made of?

Everything starts with a fabricated mild-steel structural framework: the base, columns, roof and fascia, all given an anti-rust treatment before anything goes over them. We use steel, not timber, because a kiosk in an open atrium or beside a terminal gate takes heat and humidity and gets handled all day, and it has to hold its shape through all of it. Timber moves. Steel does not.

Over the frame sits an insulated wall build-up with a weatherproof external substrate and an internal lining, a roof with membrane waterproofing, and a durable, water-resistant floor. This is the boring part of the build. It is also the part that decides whether the kiosk still looks square in year three.

Footprints are kept to sizes that drop into a mall or airport bay without a fight, usually around 8 ft by 8 ft up to 10 ft by 10 ft, and about 8 ft tall. The wall build-up itself changes with where the kiosk lands. A unit in a covered atrium needs less weather protection than one sitting near an open terminal frontage, so the insulation and sealing get specified to the actual spot rather than a generic template.

What materials do people see and touch?

The outside is where the brand lives, so the finishes have to look sharp and survive a public floor. On a typical food kiosk we use walnut-finish WPC vertical louvers rather than real wood. WPC handles humidity and daily cleaning without warping or splitting, which real timber will not do in an Indian mall. Around the louvers go textured stone or concrete-finish panels and a dark fascia that carries the backlit sign.

The working surfaces are built to take knocks and spills. Here is the core material spec on a standard cafe kiosk:

  • Engineered-stone service counter with finished edges, over a boiling-waterproof plywood carcass.
  • Marble-finish backsplash behind the prep and coffee line.
  • Base and overhead cabinets with quality hardware, plus open display shelving for grab-and-go stock.
  • Fixed display glazing and a top-hung serving window, both in toughened glass, with the window held open on gas struts.

None of that is exotic. It is the same grade of material a good commercial fit-out uses, picked because it cleans easily and does not date.

What services are built into the kiosk?

A food kiosk is really a small building, so it carries its own wiring and plumbing. We run internal wiring, a distribution board and power points sized for the appliances a cafe uses: an espresso machine, a grinder, a fridge, a microwave or OTG. Lighting is layered. Recessed LED spotlights light the work area, and accent LED runs around the perimeter, under the counter and in the signage cove so the unit reads well by day and pulls attention after dark. A stainless-steel sink with faucet, water supply and drainage handles hygiene, and we leave provision for exhaust and cooling.

One line clients often miss. We build in the electrical and plumbing points for the kitchen equipment, but the appliances themselves are usually the client's own. The kiosk is ready for them on day one.

Why is it built in our own workshop?

All of this is fabricated in our own 6000+ sq ft unit in Powai, Mumbai, not subcontracted out. In-house fabrication is the reason the material and finish stay consistent from one kiosk to the next, and the reason a fault gets caught at our factory quality check instead of on site. From design sign-off to a finished, installed unit runs about three to four weeks, across five stages: design development, itemised BOQ, fabrication, finishing and QC, then delivery and installation. Every kiosk carries a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and workmanship defects.

This is the same build system we ran for Uber across the Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata airports, and for cafe brands like Penguin Bean and Tuskin. High-footfall sites with no room for a weak finish. How is the spec set before you get a price?

The reason we can talk about materials this precisely is that we quote from a bill of quantities, not a lump sum. Before a single sheet is cut, the itemised BOQ lists every material, finish and fitting with a number against it. You approve the spec, and the price holds to it. Any change after that is priced in writing before it is booked, so the kiosk you saw in the drawing is the kiosk that turns up. It is a slower way to quote. It is also a much harder one to argue with later.
